Terpene Resin is polymerized from turpentine. It is an excellent bio-based and odorless tackifier with strong adhesion, heat resistance, radiation resistance, acid and alkali resistance, aging resistance and excellent dielectric properties. It can significantly improve the initial viscosity of pressure-sensitive adhesive products. And it can be well compatible and dissolved hydrocarbon solvents. It is well used in rubbers, adhesives, hot melt coatings, high-end printing inks, fillers, anti-rust paints and other products.
Physical and chemical properties
Terpene Resin are yellow transparent, brittle thermoplastic solids. It has the properties of non-toxic, odorless, radiation resistance and anti-crystallization; it is relatively stable to oxygen, heat and light; it has good compatibility with various synthetic substances; good heat resistance, dilute acid and dilute alkali resistance; strong viscosity , strong electrical insulation; easily soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons and vegetable oils, insoluble in water and ethanol.
The main purpose
Terpene Resin is an excellent tackifier, and its tackifying performance is better than that of rosin, rosin resin and petroleum resin; it is also a modifier of hot melt materials. It has a wide range of applications and is widely used in rubbers, adhesives, pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes, hot melt coatings, paints, advanced inks, packaging, anti-rust oils, chewing gum and other industries.
Manufacturing principle
Terpene Resin, the molecular formula (C10H16) n, is also known as polyterpene resin or pinene resin. It is mainly a series of linear copolymers from liquid to solid obtained by cationic polymerization of α-pinene or β-pinene of turpentine under the action of Freight-Kelstein catalyst. Terpenes are typically extracted from pine trees, coniferous trees, and other plants. There are some different bicyclic monoterpene pinenes to be polymerized, such as these terpene oligomers (CAS 31393-98-3/CAS 25766-18-1/CAS 70750-57-1/CAS 25719-60-2/CAS 9003-74-1).
Alpha-pinene and beta-pinene oligomers is a main type of terpenic polymer with a wide range of applications. Terpenes and terpenoids, turpentine-oil, α-pinene fraction, oligomers is another pure polymeric terpenes with good compatibility and molecular weight distribution.
Terpene resins exhibit excellent performance in specific high-value applications. Its excellent thickening performance, good thermal stability, and wide compatibility make it the preferred material for high-performance pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) such as labels, tapes, and specialty films. In addition, in high demand applications such as footwear, packaging, and book binding, terpene resins are also highly favored for their odorlessness, color stability, and strong adhesion, making them an ideal choice for hot melt adhesives.
